About this client/child: Lydia (18), has 3 siblings, aged 14, 15 and 16, and she spends alternate weekends with them, her dad and step-mum. Lydia loves long walks, YouTube videos, jigsaws, spending time on her iPad, listening to music, and visiting coffee shops and cafes. Lydia has a diagnosis of Autistic Spectrum Condition (ASC), a learning disability, and can present with behaviours that may challenge. Lydia is verbal, though she can be unclear in her speaking. Lydia finds transitions difficult and may become dysregulated and anxious during these times. She can also become fixated with certain things, and she is vulnerable when out in the community. She will need constant monitoring and vigilance, to ensure that she remains safe.

Overview of role: This is a ‘live-in’ role, working alternate weekends, starting at 5.00pm on Fridays, through to 2.30pm on Sundays. The focus of the role is spending time with Lydia and supporting her to do the things she likes to do. Lydia regulates herself on long walks, and this will be the main activity that the new PA will do with her, Lydia likes to take up to three walks a day, even during the winter. Her new PA will be fit and happy to go on long walks with her. Lydia will need constant monitoring on walks, as she is not aware of road safety. If Lydia is feeling well, she might like to visit a coffee shop or café. When at home, Lydia likes to watch videos on her iPad, and do jigsaws if she is in the mood. It would be great if the PA has a ‘muck in’ attitude and can support around the home by prompting all the children to tidy up after themselves, and support with meal prep and the children’s laundry. Lydia will need prompting and support with her personal care. During the on-call night, the PA has her own bed in Lydia’s room. Lydia may wake up during the night and will need to be encouraged to go back to sleep. Lydia takes medication daily, and the PA will need to be diligent in administering and recording all her doses. The PA must also be confident to support Lydia’s extreme OCD behaviours with positive strategies.

Who this job would suit: This role will suit a very confident person, with experience and training in supporting clients with SEN and behaviours that challenge. Perhaps someone who is studying within a related field and is looking for a part time role alongside this.

What’s great about this job: This is a long-term role, and the family are happy to pay for additional training if candidates deem it important.
