About this client/child: Penny (12) is an active and energetic child. She loves swimming, cycling, ice skating, climbing, walks in the park and days out to theme parks such as Chessington World of Adventure. Pretty much anything that gets Penny out and about, she will enjoy, especially trips on the bus. Her only real dislike is the cinema! Penny has ASC, ADHD and can present with behaviours that may challenge. She is also currently awaiting a formal diagnosis for Ehlers Danlos Syndrome (EDS). Penny is home-schooled by her fantastic mum and follows an ABA programme. Penny can communicate in single words and generally makes her needs known when at home. She is toilet trained but will need some assistance and prompts when it comes to her personal care, feeding and independent tasks.
Overview of role: Penny’s mum has been wearing many hats over the last 12 years – mum, teacher, and ABA Tutor to name a few. It is finally time she finds an extra pair of hands who can assist her with Penny’s support. Mum is looking for someone she can bounce ideas off and someone who brings positive energy to the room. During the mornings, you will be assisting either mum or the ABA tutors with Penny’s target-based activities. The afternoons will be varied depending on Penny’s mood but will usually involve an activity outside of the house. A Support Worker / PA who can facilitate different activities and help keep Penny engaged is important. When going out in the community Penny requires two people, the second person will usually be Penny’s mum. When at home, the family are looking for someone who is happy to ‘muck in’, help with food preparation and some light domestic tasks related to Penny, such as general tidying. Forward planning for the next day is also very important!
Who this job would suit: This role will suit a support worker who has good experience working with a young person with ASC and/or behaviours that may challenge. Someone who is enthusiastic, outgoing, has high energy and can offer Penny lots of fun will be key. We are looking for someone who is happy to get stuck in with all activities, can use their own initiative and can offer flexibility in their approach as things can change depending on Penny’s mood. Penny will test boundaries so someone who is not fazed by this is important. This is a lively household who welcome giggles and a sense of humour!
What’s great about this job: You will be joining an energetic family who are always up for adventures and fun! Great ABA training will be provided by mum, as well as having the chance to spend time with their ABA consultant and Educational Psychologist.
