About this client/child: Meet Maya, a vibrant 19-year-old with a cheeky sense of humour. She loves buses, street musicians, swimming, funfairs, meal deal picnics, and chilling with her iPad. Maya has severe learning difficulties, autism, and epilepsy. She may be non-verbal, but she communicates in her own way through expressions, signs, and leading you to what she wants. If you're patient, playful, and energetic, Maya will brighten your day! Maya’s epilepsy is mostly nocturnal, but she may have occasional seizures during the day. She’s physically able, but needs help with personal care, like dressing, showering, and using the toilet. Overall, she’s full of energy and ready to explore the world with you!
Overview of role: Maya is in her first of three years at college and within the next 6 months the plan will be for her to move into supported living locally. This will be a very exciting, albeit daunting step for her. As Maya’s Support Worker/Buddy, you’ll help her with this transition and be her sidekick on adventures around town. Whether it’s discovering new activities for you to enjoy or exploring outdoor spaces together, you’ll play a key role in helping Maya build her independence and social skills. There will also be the option of additional hours to travel with the family to Maya’s grandparents for two nights occasionally.
Who this job would suit: Someone who is energetic, creative, and ready to make a positive impact on Maya’s life. Previous experience working with a young adult with additional needs is a must, but if you don’t have experience with epilepsy, no worries – the family will provide training. What matters most is your enthusiasm, understanding, and willingness to stick around for the long haul and build a strong bond with Maya. It is a genuine occupational requirement that the Support Worker / Buddy fits in with the client’s peer group.
What’s great about this job: This is a lovely family who have a great history for forming lasting relationships with previous Support Workers. Maya is lots of fun to be around and will certainly make it a very rewarding role.
