Recruiter: Rachael rachael@snapcare.co.uk
About this client/child: Peter (18) loves all things sensory, in particular music (all genres!) but also light up toys and touch. He still likes to cuddle and have someone sitting next to him on the sofa. Peter has a genetic disorder which causes global developmental delay. He is non-verbal and communicates mainly with sounds/noises and body language. He understands some basic signs, and situational commands you will need to get to know him well to interpret his sounds and body language well. Peter is a full-time wheelchair user but can weight bear and uses a stander for daily exercise. He requires help with all aspects of personal care, dressing/undressing, showering, toileting (he wears pads as he has accidents, but also uses the toilet). Peter eats and drinks but needs hand-over-hand support. He loves all kinds of food, especially cake! Peter has epilepsy, including tonic-clonic seizures. He takes medication, but seizures still happen several times a week, usually at night.
Overview of role: Peter attends a local special needs school from 9.00am to 3.00pm. At 3.00 pm he will need to be collected from school by the Professional Support Worker / PA using the family car. The car has a swivel seat for easier transfers. Once at home, there may be some toileting required, followed by assisting Peter to have a snack, such as a piece of fruit and a drink. If Peter is not too tired, he should then use his stander, do some stretching exercises (not always so keen to do this so encouragement is needed) or do some arts and crafts with him. If he is tired, he may have a nap on the sofa or relax in his easy chair listening to some music or being outside in the garden. A few times a week Peter will need a shower which Dad will be on hand to assist with as a second person. On some days, and when Peter is tired or too unwell to engage in activities, you may be asked to run errands (such as picking up medication from the pharmacy) or perform light housework (such as hanging up the laundry). Peter’s equipment such as his chair/wheelchair will also need to be cleaned regularly. The hourly rate offered is between £18.00 to £20.00 Gross per hour DOE.
Who this job would suit: Peter is a gentle young man, with no behaviours that may challenge; he can be rather passive, so he needs someone with energy and motivation to help engage him in activities. If he has a tummy ache, he may be VERY vocal, so you will need to be tolerant to noise. The Professional Support Worker / PA will perform manual handling, such as supporting transfers from chair to toilet or from wheelchair to car seat. Ideally, you will have a good understanding of how body movements work and are physically fit, as this will help not only with the manual handling, but also with the stretching exercises.
What’s great about this job: This is a family well known to Snap Care and positive feedback from candidates has always been received. A great working environment with a supportive family. Epilepsy training will also be provided by the school nurse.
