About this client/child: Harry is an 8-year-old boy; he is a happy, engaging, and cheeky chap. He loves listening to music, painting, sensory activities and playing games with his two younger brothers. Harry also enjoys spending time outdoors where he can listen to the birds and all the sounds of nature. Harry has significant complex care and medical needs; he is totally reliant on others to meet all his needs and is supported by a dedicated care team providing 2:1, 24/7 support. Harry has cerebral palsy, dysphagia, epilepsy (VNS in situ, however, will experience regular seizures), a PEG for all nutrition, fluids, and medication, and requires suctioning. He has a visual impairment, using Eye Gaze Technology to support his communication and is a wheelchair user. He is susceptible to chest infections, and chest physio is implemented daily and cough assist. He is at the heart of a loving and supportive family, his parents recognise that his team of support workers are instrumental in his overall development, and they ensure their home is a pleasant and professional working environment.

Overview of role: For the first 6 months of this contract, you will be working as a Waking Night Carer on Wednesday and Thursday nights, this may continue for the full 12 months, however, if the Wednesday and Thursday shifts are not available, 24 contracted hours will be offered for remaining 6 months and may include working day hours. Harry has 1 waking night staff member on shift, alongside a sleeping night carer most nights; you will alert the sleeping night carer or parent (if no sleep night team member on shift) via a monitor if / when you require their support to assist. Harry requires constant supervision throughout the night; the role involves administering medication, observations (sats, temp), manual handling, repositioning, looking for signs of deterioration / seizures, chest physio and suctioning, if needed. Training is provided, however due to Harry’s level of medical needs, some complex care experience would be needed; a large part of this position involves clinical care. There will be an initial period of shadow shifts working alongside an experienced waking night carer, these shadow shifts are unlikely to fall on the Wednesday and Thursday, and some will be training arranged for during the day, so please take this into consideration before applying. The team may be asked to support with family holidays also but only for short periods of time.

Who this job would suit: A positive, resilient, confident and empathetic professional with previous experience supporting a young person with a high level of complex care needs. You will be dedicated, committed and enjoy working as part of a team. For this role it is essential that you are a driver (with your own car to travel to the family home) and a non-smoker vaper.

What’s great about this job: Harry is an adorable, happy and cheerful young chap – he is an absolute pleasure to work with and support. Excellent person-centred training is provided in all aspects of his care and medical needs. A fantastic opportunity to upskill.
