About our client: Hamish is 13 years old and lives with his mum, dad and little sister, he is very much at the heart of his loving and supportive family. His little sister is everything to him, most of the time! Hamish is utterly charming and engaging, he has a real twinkle in his eye. His SEN Support Worker will gain instant points if they are able to pick up ‘Hamish’s world view’ ie, being in on his jokes and tricks. He loves to make people jump and laugh! Hamish enjoys being read to, listening to music, talking about his favourite things / films and doing fun things with his support workers, either in his lovely garden (where he can reach high speeds in his electric wheelchair), or going out and about locally. Hamish has Cerebral Palsy which affects all 4 limbs but predominantly so on his right side. He can feed himself with gentle prompting and requires help with dressing and personal care. He has some challenges with communication which his therapy team are supporting him with so showing patience and encouragement when he is talking is paramount. Hamish has epilepsy; more detailed information regarding this is available upon application.

Overview of role: A typical shift starts at 9.00am, with Hamish’ SEN Support Worker assisting either his mum or dad in getting him ready for the day. Weekends are more relaxed and there is time for him to chill and rest after a busy week.  Hamish has a fantastic, fully adapted bedroom and bathroom, as well as a wonderful playroom where, with the encouragement of his SEN Support Worker, he sets his ‘agenda’—an agreed list of toys and games he wants to play with that day. To ensure he feels secure, it's vital to organise his playtime, homework time, and outings in advance. Hamish loves to be the best, which is very useful when encouraging him to participate in activities such as hoist transfers, supported by a reward scheme. As the weather gets warmer, it would be great for Hamish to be driven to places like garden centres or for walks in the country. On Mondays, Hamish arrives home between 3.30pm and 4.00pm, the SEN Support Worker start time is 2.00pm, meaning that you have time to prep, before completing the school run with Mum or Dad. Hamish comes home from school, has a snack, and enjoys some time to relax before homework, therapy, tea-time, and then getting ready for bed.

Who this job would suit: This role is ideal for a SEN Support Worker who can understand and engage with Hamish, building a trustworthy connection. The ideal candidate will have experience working with young teenagers and collaborating with family members or siblings. They should bring a sense of fun, good humour, and thoughtfulness to the role.

What’s great about this job: Expect excellent onboarding, ongoing supervision and training, plus wonderful support from this incredibly warm and welcoming family. Overall this is a fantastic opportunity to work with a rather special young person and his family.
